Fire Barriers

Spray foam insulation is an excellent fire barrier for the same reasons that it's the best type of insulation. The foam minimizes heat and air (smoke) transfer between inner and outer walls, and ceiling and roof structures, to stop or significantly slow the spread of flames. It gives people more time to evacuate and gives firefighters more time to arrive on site and do their work. The foam, although not easily combustible, will burn if exposed to an open flame. Regulations stipulate that the foam be covered with either ½” drywall, ¾” plaster or a thermal ignition barrier coating.
